The manuscript collection of Richard T. Ely was compiled for the study of economic development and is particularly illustrative of land tenure in England in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. It consists of about a hundred pieces and includes rent rolls, land and other leases, deeds, wills, court orders, bankruptcy petitions, writs of judgment, petitions to Parliament, agreements regarding the use of commons and market places, a cashbook, two account books, and a court record book. Another portion contains letters from John Stuart Mill, Francis Place, Travers Twiss, G.B. Say, H.S. Henley, Thomas Cooper, Robert Owen, Benjamin Jowett, and the Marquis Townshend. The personal papers of Richard T. Ely include letters of book and manuscript dealers and collectors, notebooks for courses in economics at the University of Heidelberg, and a notebook outlining an economics textbook. The papers of Ezra Sterling Ely consist of business papers; sketches; legal documents such as deeds of land in the town of Fredonia, N.Y.; letters to Ely as assistant engineer of the McKean and Buffalo Railroad; bridge specifications, bids, and contracts; and survey notes, sketches, and plans of street systems, railroad sidings, culverts, and railroad stations.
